About american design
The strongest thread is the Portland-to-Brooklyn workshop tradition: small manufacturers making a narrow range of objects in hardwood, solid brass and machined aluminium, sold direct, photographed on a workbench. It is a genuinely distinct sensibility, more tactile and less resolved than the Scandinavian equivalent, and it has produced some of the best desk and carry objects available anywhere.
The other American strand here is technology treated as industrial design — audio equipment and connected devices where the housing and the controls were designed with the same care as the electronics. Shipping and duties are worth checking before ordering from Europe; several of these makers ship internationally but not cheaply.
