Spanish, American and German makers lead, and the spread of types is narrow — furniture, fire and cooking. The materials do most of the work. Teak and acacia weather to grey without structural loss, powder-coated aluminium resists corrosion at low weight, and stainless steel is worth its cost only in marine grades. Anything that relies on a surface coating to keep water out will eventually fail at an edge.
This is the highest-priced category in the directory after leather goods, and that reflects material grade rather than margin. A properly specified outdoor chair is a genuinely difficult object to make.
What to look for
- Marine-grade stainless (316) or powder-coated aluminium; plain steel rusts at every fixing.
- FSC-certified teak or acacia, and clarity on whether it is expected to grey.
- Solution-dyed fabrics for cushions — surface-dyed fades within a season.
- Drainage in seat frames and cushion cores, not just quick-dry marketing copy.
