The distinction that matters most is edition structure. An open edition is printed on demand and priced accordingly. A limited edition is numbered, capped and usually signed, which is what gives it a secondary market. Neither is inherently better as an object on a wall, but they are different purchases, and listings that blur the two are worth treating carefully.
This category also carries the directory's design publishers — the imprints and magazines whose books and back catalogues function as art objects in their own right. German and Dutch houses are strongly represented, which reflects where independent design publishing has actually held on.
What to look for
- Stated paper weight and stock. Archival cotton rag behaves very differently from coated poster stock.
- Pigment inks over dye inks — dye fades visibly within a few years in daylight.
- Edition size and whether the plates are destroyed after the run.
- Whether the listed size is the image or the sheet, including margin.
