The entries that do tend to be either design houses extending into scent with the same material discipline they apply to objects, or specialist makers pouring in small batches. Both are preferable to licensed fragrance, where the name on the label and the company making the product have no real relationship.
Wax matters more than most listings admit. Paraffin throws scent strongly and cheaply; soy, rapeseed and beeswax burn longer and cleaner but carry fragrance less aggressively, which is why good soy candles are scented for a room rather than a floor.
What to look for
- Stated wax type and fragrance load — a serious maker publishes both.
- Cotton or wood wicks; avoid anything with a metal core.
- Burn time relative to weight, which exposes an underfilled vessel.
- A vessel worth keeping once the candle is finished.
