About austrian design
The Viennese contribution to modern design was to argue that ornament and structure should be separated, and that a well-made everyday object needs no decoration to justify itself. Thonet's bentwood chair, still in production after more than a century and a half, is the clearest surviving statement of that position.
Contemporary Austrian entries here are mostly small workshops in leather, wood and lighting, working at a scale where the maker is identifiable. Low volume, high execution, and usually a willingness to make variations to order.
