Functionalism landed early in Sweden and merged with an existing folk-craft vocabulary, which is why so much Swedish design reads as both modern and domestic. Pale birch and ash, painted surfaces, woven textiles in flat colour. It is less formally ambitious than Danish work of the same period and considerably more livable.
