British makers are the largest group, joined by Italian, Spanish and Austrian workshops. Most entries work in vegetable-tanned leather, which takes months to tan rather than hours and develops the darkening and sheen that chrome-tanned leather never will. It is also stiffer at first, which is why a good bag feels slightly unyielding when new.
This is the most expensive category in the directory by median price, and that reflects real material cost rather than positioning. A full hide of good vegetable-tanned leather is a significant input, and the cutting waste on a structured bag is considerable.
What to look for
- Vegetable-tanned rather than chrome-tanned leather if you want the piece to patinate.
- Full-grain, not "genuine leather" — the latter is a lower grade despite the name.
- Stitching density and whether edges are burnished or merely painted.
- Hardware in solid brass or stainless steel; plated zinc fails first.
