A hand-knotted rug is built knot by knot on a loom and can take months; it holds value, can be repaired, and shows small irregularities that are evidence of process rather than defect. A machine-woven rug is manufactured in hours, costs a fraction, and is a perfectly reasonable purchase provided it is priced and described as what it is. The entries here include both, and the German and Portuguese sources are transparent about which is which.
Fibre matters as much as construction. Wool resists crushing and soil, and it is naturally flame-retardant. Polypropylene cleans easily and costs little but mats permanently under furniture. Viscose looks like silk in photographs and marks with water.
What to look for
- Knot density for hand-knotted pieces — stated in knots per square inch or metre.
- Fibre content by percentage, and scepticism toward viscose in high-traffic rooms.
- Pile height and weight per square metre, which indicate how it will wear.
- Whether the rug needs a separate underlay to stay put and wear evenly.
