British design

The strongest showing is in leather goods, stationery and independent publishing. London and the northern craft towns support a dense network of small workshops working to order, and several of the design magazines that define the sector's visual language are edited from the UK. That combination gives the British entries here an editorial quality: they tend to have a stated point of view.

The furniture and lighting that does appear leans toward the studio end — small production runs, named designers, materials chosen for how they age. Less industrial capacity than Germany or Italy, more willingness to make one hundred of something well.
