European sources lead, with linen the recurring material. Linen is worth understanding on its own terms: it is stronger wet than dry, it softens substantially over the first dozen washes, and it wrinkles permanently by design. Buying linen and expecting it to press flat is the most common disappointment in this category.
Thread count is close to meaningless as a quality signal above roughly 400, since it can be inflated by counting plies. Fibre length is the number that actually predicts how a cotton sheet will feel and wear, and the makers worth buying from say so.
What to look for
- Long-staple or extra-long-staple cotton named explicitly, rather than a thread count above 600.
- European flax certification for linen, and stated GSM for weight.
- OEKO-TEX or GOTS certification for anything sleeping against skin.
- Stated shrinkage and whether the fabric is pre-washed.
