About danish design

The post-war generation — Wegner, Juhl, Jacobsen, Henningsen — worked under a set of constraints that turned out to be productive: limited materials, small workshops, and a cabinetmakers' guild that exhibited annually and judged work on joinery. What came out was furniture designed around the human body rather than a silhouette, and lighting built to shield the bulb so the room reads as lit rather than the fixture as bright.

The contemporary Danish brands here inherit the method more than the look. Solid wood over veneer, upholstery that can be reupholstered, fixtures whose bulbs you can still replace in twenty years. The aesthetic has loosened — colour and playfulness have returned — but the underlying assumption that a piece should outlive its owner has not.
